SELF

1. When God gave Israel the Ten Commandments, they said the following to Moses: "Go near and listen to all that the Lord our God says. Then tell us whatever the Lord our God tells you. We will listen and obey.”"  Then, listen to God's response to them:  "The Lord heard you when you spoke to me and the Lord said to me, “I have heard what this people said to you. Everything they said was good. Oh, that their hearts would be inclined to fear me and keep all my commands always, so that it might go well with them and their children forever!" (Deuteronomy 5:27-29)

2. Israel's inability to obey God was not just their problem: it is man's problem-your problem and my problem!  Self draws us toward sin and not toward God.  Listen to the cries of those who realized that a stronger force than them was powerfully drawing them away from God and toward wickedness:  "The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?" (Jeremiah 17:9) "All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away." (Isaiah 64:6, NIV)  "What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?" (Romans 7:24)  We are powerless to against the pull of the world, the flesh, and the devil.  We need God's LIGHT, LOVE, and LIFE to enable us to resist the pull within us that draws us away from God and toward what we know is wrong.

3. God's part is to give us His LIGHT, LOVE, and LIFE; our part is to resist the world, pay the price of the CROSS, so that we can LOVE.  What we are not able to do, God will enable us to do.  "His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires." (2 Peter 1:3-4)
