1. We became new creatures when we became a Christian (This is true of every Christian.):  We now, in our innermost being, desire to please God.  We also now have the God-given ability to obey God.  Nevertheless, we still live in a fallen body with the habit patterns we developed when we were children of the devil.  We also live in the world system that is ruled by the devil.

2. We need to reckon it to be true that we are new creatures (This is simply believing that it is true and acting accordingly).

3. We are to choose to live as the new creations that we are (present our bodies as living sacrifices; do not offer the parts of your bodies to sin; seek first His kingdom and His righteousness; deny self and take up the cross).

4. We are to seek a new way of looking at life as revealed to in God's Word and illumined by God's Spirit. (transformed by the renewing of our minds; God's purposes are to replace our purposes.  God's wisdom is to replace our wisdom.  We are to not love the world, but love God and His ways.  No one can serve two masters).

5. We are to seek to trust and obey God on a moment by moment basis (be filled with God's Spirit; rejoice always, be doers of the Word and not just hearers only; put off that which is sinful and doing that which is pure and lovely).

6. We are to seek God and to seek to obey God with all diligence ("make every effort") (not to be lukewarm but red-hot; "never be lacking in zeal"; "press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me…straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal…").

7. The ultimate test will be growth in godly character; particularly there will be growth in love.

8. We are not under law, but under grace, so we are not under constant condemnation when we fail to be perfect, and when we sin.
