BE FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT VERSES

FIRST OF ALL, WHO IS THE HOLY SPIRIT?

He is God:
Acts 5:3,4 - "Then Peter said, 'Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit….You have not lied to men but to God."

Matthew 12:31,32 - "And so I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.  Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come."

Psalm 139:7 - Where can I go from your Spirit?  Where can I flee from your presence?

Acts 16:6,7 - "Paul and his companions traveled throughout the region of Phyrgia and Galatia, having been kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia.  When they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bythynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to."

Acts 20:28 - "Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers…."

He is a person:
He speaks - Acts 8:29, 13:2 - "The Spirit told Philip, 'Go to that chariot and stay near it."  "While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, 'Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.'"

He leads and guides -John 16:13 - "But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth.  He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears; and he will tell you what is to come."

He leads and guides - Romans 8:14 - "because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God."

He can be grieved - Ephesians 4:30 - "And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption."

THE HOLY SPIRIT IS IN EACH CHRISTIAN

Romans 8:9 - "You however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you.  And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ."

Romans 8:11 - "And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you."

John 4:13,14 - "Jesus answered, 'Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst.  Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."

John 7:38,39 - "Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.  By this he meant the Spirit whom those who believed in him were later to receive.  Up to that time Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not been glorified."

Galatians 5:22,23 - "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.  Against such thing there is no law."

WHAT DOES BEING "FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT," MEAN?

I Corinthians 12:13 - "For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body---whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free---and we were all given the one Spirit to drink."

Galatians 5:16,17,19-21 - "So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature.  For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature.  They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what want……"The acts of the sinful nature [flesh] are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like.  I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God."

John 10:10 - "the thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full."

HOW CAN WE BE FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT?

I Corinthians 6:19 - "Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?  You are not your own; you were bought with a price.  Therefore honor God with your body."

II Corinthians 4:7 - "But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us."

II Peter 1:3,4 - "His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.  Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires."

Ephesians 4:1 - "As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received."

Romans 6:13 - "Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness."

Galatians 5:25 - "Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit."

I John 1:9 -"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."

James 4:6-10 - "But he give us more grace.  That is why the Scripture says: 'God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.' Submit yourselves, then, to God.  Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.  Come near to God and he will come near to you.  Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.  Grieve, mourn and wail.  Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom.  Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up."

Galatians 5:16 - "so I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature."

Matthew 5:23-24 - "“Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift."

Luke 19:8 - "But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.”"

Romans 12:2 - "Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind….."

I Peter 2:2 - "Like new born babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation,"

II Timothy 2:15 - "Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth."

II Peter 1:3-8 - "His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.  Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.  For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love.  For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ."

Hebrews 5:14 - "But solid food is for the nature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil."

James 1:5-8 -"If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.  But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.  That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does."

Ephesians 4:11-13 - "It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ."
