RESISTING TEMPTATION VERSES

Temptation is not sin
Hebrews 4:15 - "For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are---yet was without sin."

Satan is "the tempter
I Thessalonians 3:5 - "For this reason, when I could stand it no longer, I sent to find out about your faith.  I was afraid that in some way the tempter might have tempted you and our efforts might have been useless."

Matthew 4:3 - "The tempter came to him and said, 'If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread."

Lust of the flesh
Genesis 25:29-34 - "Once when Jacob was cooking some stew, Esau came in from the open country, famished.  He said to Jacob, 'Quick, let me have some of that red stew!  I'm famished!'…..Jacob replied, 'First sell me your birthright.'  'Look, I am about to die,' Esau said.  'What good is the birthright to me?'  But Jacob said, 'Swear to me first.'  So he swore an oath to him, selling his birthright to Jacob.  Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and some lentil stew.  He ate and drank, and then got up and left.  So Esau despised his birthright."

Number 25:1-3; Revelation 2:14 - "While Israel was staying in Shittim, the men began to indulge in sexual immorality with Moabite women, who invited them to the sacrifices to their gods.  The people ate and bowed down before these gods.  So Israel joined in worshiping the Baal of Peor.  And the Lord's anger burned against them….."….You have people there who hold to the teaching of Balaam who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin by eating food sacrificed to idols and by committing sexual immorality."

II Samuel 11:1-4 - "In the spring at the time when kings go to war, David sent Joab out with the king's men and the whole Israelite army.  They destroyed the Ammonites…But David remained in Jerusalem.  One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace.  For the roof he saw a woman bathing.  The woman was very beautiful, and David sent someone to find out about her.  The man said, 'Isn't this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite?'  Then David sent messengers to get her.  She came to him and he slept with her…."

I Kings ll:4 - "As Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods, and his heart was not fully devoted to the Lord his God, as the heart of his father had been."

Lust of the eyes
Joshua 7:1 - "But the Israelites acted unfaithfully in regard to the devoted things [the valuable metals in conquered Jericho were to be devoted to the Lord]; Achan…..took some of them.  So the Lord's anger burned against Israel."

I Timothy 6:9 - "People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction."

Pride of life
I Chronicles 21:1 - "Satan rose up against Israel and incited David to take a census of Israel."

Acts 5:1,2 - "Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property.  With his wife's full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself, but brought the rest and put it at the Apostle's feet."

I Timothy 3:6,7 - "He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil.  He must also have a good reputation with outsiders so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil's trap."

Lust of the flesh resisted
Genesis 39:6b-12 - "Now Joseph was well-built and handsome, and after a while his master's wife took notice of Joseph and said, 'Come to bed with me!'  But he refused.  'With me in charge,' he told her, 'my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care.  No one is greater in this house than I am.  My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife.  How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?'  And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be with her.  One day he went into the house to attend to his duties, and none of the household servants was inside.  She caught him by his cloak and said, 'Come to bed with me!'  But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house."

Lust of the eyes resisted
II Kings 5:15,16 - "Then Naaman and all his attendants went back to the man of God.  He stood before him and said, 'Now I know that there is no God in all the world except in Israel.  Please accept now a gift from your servant.'  The prophet answered, 'As surely as the Lord lives, whom I serve, I will not accept a thing,'  And even though Naaman urged him, he refused." (Gehazi did, though!)

Pride of life resisted
Acts 14:11-15 - "When the crowd saw what Paul had done, they shouted in the Lycaonian language, 'The gods have come down to us in human form!'  Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul they called Hermes because he was the chief speaker.  The priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the city, brought bulls and wreathes to the city gates because he and the crowd wanted to offer sacrifices to them.  But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of this, they tore their clothes and rushed out into the crowd, shouting: 'Men, why are you doing this?  We too are only men, humans like you.  We are bringing you good news, telling you to turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made heaven and earth and sea and everything in them."

RUN FROM SOURCES OF TEMPTATION
Flee temptation
I Corinthians 6:18, 10:14 - "Flee from sexual immorality…"  "Therefore, my dear friends, flee from idolatry."

Cry for help
Matthew 6:13 - "And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one."

ELIMININATE VULNERABILITES IN ME
Eliminatate overconfidence
I Corinthians 10:12 - "So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall!"

Eliminate any desires outside of Christ
Romans 13:14 - "Rather clothe yourself with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature.

SEE SIN'S EFFECTS
Death
James 1:13-15 - "When tempted, no one should say, 'God is tempting me.'  For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed.  Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death."

Shame
Genesis 3:7-10 - "Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.  Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the lord God among the trees of the garden.  But the Lord God called to the man. 'Where are you?'  He answered, 'I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.'"

Slavery
John 8:34 - "Jesus replied, 'I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin."

Romans 6:15,16 - "What then?  Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace?  By no means!  Don't you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one you obey---whether you are slaves to sin which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness."

Scars
Exodus 20:5 - "You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,"

Vulnerability
Romans 6:19 - "I put this in human terms because you are weak in your natural selves.  Just as you used to offer the parts of your body in slavery to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness,…."

I Timothy 6:9 - "People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction."

I'M NOT ALONE
Jesus understands
Hebrews 2:18, 4:15,16 - "Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted."  "For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are---yet was without sin.  Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in time of need."

Will not be tempted beyond our strenght
I Corinthians 10:13 - "No temptation has seized you except what is common to man.  And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear.  But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it."

SEEK AFTER GOD
Pursue godliness
II Timothy 2:22 - "Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart."

Seek after the desires of the Holy Spirit
Romans 8:5,6 - "Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.  The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life."

Galatians 5:16 - "So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature."

TO BE CONTENT
Philippians 4:11 - "I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances."

I Timothy 6:6-10 - "But godliness with contentment is great gain.  For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.  But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.  People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction.  For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.  Some people, eager for money have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs."

Proverbs 5:15-20
"Drink water from your own cistern, running water from your own well.  Should your springs overflow in the streets, your streams of water in the public squares?  Let them be yours alone, never to be shared with strangers.  May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth.  A loving doe, a graceful deer—may her breasts satisfy you always, may you ever be captivated by her love.  Why be captivated, my son, by an adulteress?  Why embrace the bosom of another man's wife?"
