SUBMISSION

"Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ." (Eph 5:21)

Although most everyone would agree that there is a need for submission, most everyone would also agree that voluntary submission is not something that comes easily to us.

WHAT IS SUBMISSION?

"The Greek word for submission is hupotasso.  The single verb tasso was used in classical Greek in a military meaning….It speaks of soldiers marshaled in military order under a commanding officer.  Thus, it speaks of the subjection of one individual under or to another.  The prefixed preposition hupo means under [like our "hypo"]…..In N.T. Greek, it means to arrange under, to subordinate, to put in subjection; in the middle voice as it is used here [Eph 5:21], to subject oneself to, to obey."  From Wuest's WORD STUDIES IN THE GREEK NEW TESTAMENT

WHY IS THERE A NEED FOR US TO SUBMIT TO OTHERS?

1. Without submission to others there will be total chaos and anarchy.  We     cannot all be in charge over everybody - have everyone under us.  We
cannot be completely in charge of ourselves - do everything we want to do.     (Judges 21:25).
2. Men became rebels against God's ultimate authority over us at the Fall (Eph     2:1,2; Col 1:21).
3. For there to be order among human beings, God has established systems of     authority in our world (in government, in the family, in the work place, and in     the Church) (Rom 13:1-7)

WHAT WILL HELP WE WHO ARE CHRISTIANS TO JOYFULLY AND VOLUNTARILY SUBMIT TO AUTHORITY?

1. God's submissive Holy Spirit lives in each of us who are Christians.

2. "Reverance for Christ" (fear of God) will result in you and I being willing to     submit to others (Eph 5:21)  It enables us to make a paradigm shift (a new     way of looking at life) from seeing the world revolving around us and our     plans, to seeing the the world revolving around God and His plans.
3. We are to follow Jesus' pattern of submission (Phil 2:5-8)
4. Our submission to authority will result in glory being given to God (I Pet
    2:13-17)

WE ARE TO BE SUBMISSIVE TO THE AUTHORITES THAT ARE
ESTABLISHED BY GOD

1. We are to voluntarily submit to governing authorities (Rom 13:1-3; I Pet     2:13,14; Tit 3:1)
2. We are to voluntarily submit to God's ordained roles within the family

3. We are to voluntarily submit to God's ordained roles in the work place.

4. We are to voluntarily submit to God's ordained roles in the Church

THERE ARE SOME SITUATIONS WHERE WE NEED TO DISOBEY AUTHORITIES

1. When those in authority command us to disobey God, we are to obey God     rather than man (Act 4:18,19; 5:25-29).
2. When a Church leader is seeking to lead us away from God, we are not to     follow him (III John 9-11).
