SUBMISSION VERSES

Why is there a need for us to submit to others?
Judges 21:25 - "In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as he saw fit" ["what was right in his own eyes"]

Ephesians 2:1,2; Colossians 1:21 - "As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient."  "Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior."

Romans 13:1-7 - "Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established.  The authorities that exist have been established by God.  Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.  For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong.  Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority?  Then do what is right and he will commend you.  For he is God's servant to do you good.  But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing.  He is God's servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.  Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also because of conscience.  This is why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God's servants, who give their full time to governing.  Give everyone what you owe him: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor."

What will help we who are Christians to joyfully and voluntarily submit to authority?
John 5:19, 12:49, 14:31 - "Jesus gave them this answer: "I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does."   "For I do not speak of my own accord, but the Father who sent me commanded me what to say and how to say it."  "but the world must learn that I love the Father and that I do exactly what my Father has commanded me…."

Hebrew 5:7,8 - "During the days of Jesus' life on earth he offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.  Although he was a son, he learned obedience from what he suffered,"

John 14:26, 15:26, 16:7,13 - "But the Counselor, the Holy spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you."  "When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from, he will testify about me."  "But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away.  Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you…..But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth.  He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come."

Ephesians 5:21 - "Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ."

Philippians 2:5-8 - "Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.  And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and become obedient to death---even death on a cross!"

I Peter 2:13-17 - "Submit yourselves for the Lord's sake to every authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority, or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong, and to commend those who do right.  For it is God's will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men.  Live as free men, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God.  Show proper repect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king."

We are to be submissive to the authorities that are established by God
Government:
Romans 13:1-3 - "Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. Then do what is right and he will commend you."

I Peter 2:13,14 - "Submit yourselves for the Lord's sake to every authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority, or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong, and to commend those who do right."

Family:
Titus 3:1 - "Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good,"

I Peter 3:1-6 - "Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of your lives.  Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes.  Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight.  For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to make themselves beautiful.  They were submissive to their own husbands, like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her master.  You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear.  Husbands, in the same way be considerate."

Ephesians 5:22-24 - "Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord.  For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior.  Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything."

Colossians 3:18 - "Wives submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord."

I Peter 3:7 - "Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers."

Ephesians 5:25-29 - "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy,…..In the same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies.  He who loves his wife loves himself.  After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church"

Colossians 3:19 - "Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them."

Ephesians 6:1-3 - "Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.  'Honor you father and mother'---which is the first commandment with a promise---'that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.'"

Colossians 3:20 - "Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord."

Ephesians 6:4 - "Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord."

Work place:
Colossians 3:22-25 - "Slaves, obey you earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to win their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord.  Whatever you do, work at it with all you heart, as working for the Lord not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward.  It is the Lord Christ you are serving.  Anyone who does wrong will be repaid for his wrong, and there is no favoritism."

I Peter 2:18-20 - "Slaves, submit yourselves to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and considerate, but also to those who are harsh.  For it is commendable if a man bears up under the pain of unjust suffering because he is conscious of God.  But how is it to your credit if you receive a beating for doing wrong and endure it?  But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God."

Titus 2:9 - "Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything, to try to please them, not to talk back to them, and not to steal from them, but to show that they can be fully trusted, so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive."

Ephesians 6:9 - "And masters, treat your slaves in the same way.  Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with him."

Colossians 4:1 - Masters, provide your slaves with what is right and fair, because you know that you also have a Master in heaven."

Church:
I Timothy 5:17-20 - "The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching.  For the Scripture says, 'Do not muzzle the ox while it is treading out the grain,' and 'The worker deserves his wages.'  Do not entertain an accusation against an elder unless it is brought by two or three witnesses.  Those who sin are to be rebuked publicly, so that the others may take warning."

Hebrews 13:17 - "Obey your leaders and submit to their authority.  They keep watch over you as men who must give an account.  Obey them so that their work will be a joy and not a burden, for that would be of no advantage to you."

I Thessalonians 5:12,13 - "Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you.  Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work.  Live in peace with each other."

Ephesians 5:21 - "submit to one another out of reverence for Christ."

I Peter 5:2-4 - "Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care, serving as overseers---not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.  And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away."

Acts 4:18,19 - "They called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.  But Peter and John replied, 'Judge for yourself whether it is right in God's sight to obey you rather than God."

III John 9-11 - "I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first will have nothing to do with us.  So if I come, I will call attention to what he is doing, gossiping maliciously about us.  Not satisfied with that, he refuses to welcome the brothers.  He also stops those who want to do so and puts them out of the church.  Dear friends, do not imitate what is evil but what is good.  Anyone who does what is good is from God.  Anyone who does what is evil has not seen God."
