SPIRITUAL GIFTS VERSES

HOW CAN YOU LEARN ABOUT YOUR SPIRITUAL GIFTS(S)?
I Corinthians 3:1-4 – "Brothers, I could not address you as spiritual but as wordly---mere infants in Christ.  I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it.  Indeed, you are still not ready.  You are still worldly.  For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly?  Are you not acting like mere men?  For when one says, 'I follow Paul,' and another, 'I follow Apollos,' are you not mere men?"

Ephesians 5:18-20 - "Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery.  Instead, be filled with the Spirit.  Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs.  Singing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ."

James 3:13-18 – "Who is wise and understanding among you?  Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.  But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth.  Such wisdom does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil.  For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.  But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruity, impartial and sincere.  Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness."

Romans 12:1,2 – "Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God---this is your spiritual act of worship.  Do not conform to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.  Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is---his good, pleasing and perfect will."

Romans 12:3-8 – "For by the grace given me I say to every one of you:  Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you.  Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.  We have different gifts, according to the grace given us.  If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith.  If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach.  If it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully."

1 Peter 4:10,11 - "Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms."  If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen."

4. Lists of spiritual gifts:

Romans 12:6-8 - "We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man’s gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully."

I Corinthians 12:7-10 – "Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.  To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.  All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each, just as he determines."

I Corinthians 12:28-31 – "And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues.  Are all apostles?  Are all prophets?  Are all teachers?  Do all work miracles?  Do all have gifts of healing?  Do all speak in tongues?  Do all interpret?  But eagerly desire the greater gifts."

Ephesians 4:11 – "It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers,"

6. The Speaking gifts
Prophecy:

Ephesians 2:19,20 – "Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God's people and members of God's household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone."

II Corinthians 12:12 – "The things that mark an apostle---signs, wonders and miracles---were done among you with great perseverance."

I Corinthians 9:1 – "Am I not free?  Am I not an apostle?  Have I not seen Jesus our Lord?  Are you not the result of my work in the Lord?"

Acts 1:21,22 – "Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from John's baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us.  For one of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection."

I Corinthians 14:29 – "Two or three prophets should speak and the others should weigh carefully [judge] what is said."

7. The Serving gifts:

Romans 12:8 – "If it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully."

Hebrews 11:1 – "Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see."

I John 4:1 – "Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out in the world."

NOTE:
Hebrews 5:11,12 – "We have much to say about this, but it is hard to explain because you are slow to learn.  In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God's word all over again.  You need milk, not solid food!"

Hebrews 10:24 – "And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.  Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another---and all the more as you see the Day approaching."

I John 4:1 – "Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out in the world."

WHAT ABOUT THE SIGN GIFTS?
1. Tongues:

I Corinthians 14:21(Isaiah 28:11) – "In the Law it is written:  'Through men of strange tongues and through the lips of foreigners I will speak to this people, but even then they will not listen to me,' says the Lord."

Acts 2:8-11 – "Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs---we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our tongues."

I Corinthians 14:2, 14-17 – "For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God.  Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit…..For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.  So what shall I do?  I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind.  If you are praising God with your spirit, how can one who finds himself among those who do not understand say 'Amen' to your thanksgiving since he does not know what you are saying?  You may be giving thanks well enough, but the other man is not edified."

I Corinthians 12:29,30 – "Are all apostles?  Are all prophets?  Are all teachers?  Do all work miracles?  Do all have gifts of healing?  Do all speak in tongues?  Do all interpret?"

I Corinthians 12:28 - "And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different of tongues."

I Corinthians 14:4,5 – "He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.  I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy.  He who prophesies edifies the church.  I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophecy.  He who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified."

I Corinthians 14:14-19 – "For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.  So what shall I do?  I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind.  If you are praising God with your spirit, how can one who finds himself among those who do not understand say 'Amen' to your thanksgiving, since he does not know what you are saying?  You may be giving thanks well enough, but the other man is not edified."

I Corinthians 12:1-3 – "Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant.  You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols.  Therefore I tell you that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, 'Jesus be cursed,' and no one can say, 'Jesus is Lord,' except by the Holy Spirit."

I Corinthians 14:28,32,33 – "If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and God……The spirits of prophets are subject to the control of prophets.  For God is not a God of disorder but of peace."

I Corinthians 14:27,28 – "If anyone speaks in a tongue, two---or at the most three---should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret.  If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and God."

I Corinthians 13:8 – Love never fails.  But where there are prophesies, they will cease [passive voice - something will cause them to cease] ; where there are tongues, they will be stilled [middle voice – stop by themselves]; where there is knowledge, it will pass away [passive voice something will cause them to pass
away] ."

2. Healing and Miracles

Matthew 9:23-25 – "When Jesus entered the ruler's house and saw the flute payers and the noisy crowd, he said, 'Go way.  The girl is not dead but asleep.'  But they laughed at him.  After the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took the girl by the hand, and she got up."

John 11:43,44 – "When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, 'Lazarus, come out!'  The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face.  Jesus said to them, 'Take off the grave clothes and let him go.'"

John 9:1, 18-21 – "As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth….The Jews still did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they sent for the man's parents.  'Is this your son?' they asked.  'Is this the one you say was born blind?  How is that now he can see?'  'We know he is our son,' the parents answered, 'and we know he was born blind.  But how he can see now, or who opened his eyes, we don't know.  Ask him.  He is of age; he will speak for himself."

Matthew 14:17,20,21,25,26 – "'We have only five loaves of bread  and two fish,' they answered….They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.  The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children….During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake.  When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified.  'It's a ghost,' they cried out in fear."

John 21:25 – "Jesus did many other things as well.  If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written."

Acts 2:43 – "All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them."

Acts 5:12-16 – "The Apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders among the people.  And all the believers used to meet together in Solomon's Colonade.  No one else dared to join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people.  Nevertheless more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number.  As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter's shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by.  Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by evil spirits, and all of them were healed."

3. Prophets

Deuteronomy 18:21,22 – "You may say to yourselves, 'How can we know when a message has not been spoken by the Lord?'  If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the Lord does not take place or come true, that is a message the Lord has not spoken.  That prophet has spoken presumptuously.  Do not be afraid of him."

Deuteronomy 13:1-5 – "If a prophet or one who foretells by dreams, appears among you and announces to you a miraculous sign or wonder, and if the sign or wonder of which he has spoken takes place, and he says, 'Let us follow other gods (gods you have not known) 'and let us worship them,' you must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer.  The Lord your God is testing you to find out whether you love him with all your heart and with all your soul.  It is the Lord your God you must follow and him you must revere.  Keep his commands and obey him; serve him and hold fast to him.  That prophet or dreamer must be put to death, because he preached rebellion against the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt and redeemed you from the land of slavery; he has tried to turn you from the way the Lord your God commanded you to follow.  You must purge the evil from among you."

I John 4:1 – "Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out in the world."

Jeremiah 23:16-40 – This is what the Lord Almighty says: 'Do not listen to what the prophets are prophesying to you; they fill you with false hopes.  They speak visions from their own minds, not from the mouth of the Lord.  They keep saying to those who despise me, 'The Lord says: You will have peace.'  And to all who follow the stubbornness of their hearts they say, 'No harm will come to you.'  But which of them has stood in the council of the Lord to see or to hear his word?.....I did not send these prophets, yet they have run with their message; I did not speak to them, yet they have prophesied.  But if they had stood in my council, they would have proclaimed my word to my people and would have turned them from their evil ways and from their evil deeds……I have heard what the prophets say who prophesy lies in my name.  They say, 'I had a dream!!  How long will this continue in the hearts of these lying prophets, who prophesy delusions of their own minds?.....'Therefore,' declares the Lord, 'I am against the prophets who steal from one another words supposedly from me. 'Yes,' declares the Lord, 'I am against the prophets who wag their own tongues and yet declare, 'The Lord declares.'  Indeed I am against those who prophesy false dreams,' declares the Lord.  'They tell them and lead my people astray with their reckless lies, yet I did not send or appoint them….If a prophet or priest or anyone else claims, 'This is the oracle of the Lord,' I will punish that man and his household……Although you claim, 'This is the oracle of the Lord,' this is what the Lord says" You used the words. 'This is the oracle of the Lord,' even though, I told you that you must not claim, 'This is the oracle of the Lord.'  Therefore I will surely forget you and cast you out of my presence along with the city I gave to you and your fathers.  I will bring upon you everlasting disgrace---everlasting shame that will not be forgotten.'"

Matthew 7:15 – [Jesus' words] "Watch out for false prophets.  They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves."

Matthew 24:10,11 – "At the time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people."

II Peter 2:1 – "But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you."

II Corinthians 11:13-15 – "For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, masquerading as apostles of Christ.  And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.  It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness.  Their end will be what their actions deserve."

I Thessalonian 5:20,21 – "do not treat prophecies with contempt.  Test everything.  Hold on to the good."

4. Baptism of the Spirit

Acts 1:5, 2:1-4 – "For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit….."When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.  Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.  They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and come to rest on each of them.  All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them."

Acts 2:38 – "Peter replied, 'Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.  And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."

Acts 8:12,14-17 – "But when they believed Philip as he preached the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women….When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them.  When they arrived, they prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, because the Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them; they had simply been baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.   Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit."

Act 10:44-46 – "While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message.  The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles.  For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God."

Act 19:1-7 – "While  Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus.  There he found some disciples and asked them, 'Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?'  They answered, 'No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.'  So Paul asked, 'Then what baptism did you receive/'  'John's baptism,' they replied.  Paul said, 'John's baptism was a baptism of repentance.  He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.  On hearing this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.  When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.  There were about twelve men in all."

Hebrews 2:2-4 – "For if the message spoken by angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment, how shall we escape if we ignore such a great salvation?  This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him.  God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will."

I Corinthians 12:13 – "For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body---whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free---and we were all given one Spirit to drink."

Titus 3:5 –"He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy.  He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit,"

Romans 8:9 – "You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you.  And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ."

Ephesians 4:5 – "one Lord, one baptism,"

II Peter 1:3-11 – "His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.  Through these he has given his very great and precious promises, so that through them you might participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption of the world caused by evil desires.  For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love.  For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.  But if anyone does not have them, he is nearsighted and blind, and has forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins."
