5. God gives grace to the humble

Matthew 23:12 – "For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted."

What we know about man's choices:
1. Men will be judged by God based on what they do in response to God's word and their consciences
Romans 2:6,14,15 – "God will give to each person according to what has done….(Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law, since they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them.)"

2. Men are limited in their choices
(a) men know God, but choose to reject until they are unable to believe
Romans 1:18-23, 28 – "The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be know about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.  For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities---his eternal power and divine nature---have been clearly seen, being understood by what has been made, so that men are without excuse.  For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.  Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles….Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done."

John 12:37,38 - Even after Jesus had done all these miraculous signs in their presence, they still would not believe in him.  This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet:  'Lord, who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?'"

John 12:39,40 – "For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere: 'He has blinded their eyes and deadened their hearts, so they can neither see with their eyes, nor understand with their hearts, nor turn---and I would heal them.'"

(b) men are dead in sin
Ephesians 2:1-3 – "As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of their air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.  All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts.  Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath."

Isaiah 64:6 – "All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away."

Jeremiah 17:9 – "The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure.  Who can understand it?"

(c) no one seeks God
Genesis 3:8-13 – "Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden.  But the Lord God called the man, 'Where are you?'  He answered, 'I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.'  And he said, 'Who told you that you were naked?  Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?  The man said, 'The woman you put here with me---she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.'  Then the Lord God said to the woman, 'What is this you have done?'  The woman said, 'The serpent deceived me, and I ate."

Romans 3:10-12 – "As it is written:  'there is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God.  All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one."

(d) men are unable to understand spiritual things
I Corinthians 2:14 – "The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned."

John 1:5 – "The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it."

(e) men are slaves to sin and unable to free themselves from it
Romans 5:12 – "Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death come to all men, because all sinned---"

Romans 6:17 – "But thanks be to God that, though you used be slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching to which you were entrusted."

Romans 7:23,34 – "but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members.  What a wretched man I am!  Who will rescue me from this body of death?"

John 8:34 – "Jesus replied, 'I tell you the truth everyone who sins is a slave of sin."

(f) our flesh is hostile to God

(g) man's mind is blinded by Satan
II Corinthians 4:4 – "The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God."

(h) Children are limited in their ability to know right from wrong

Jonah 4:11 – "But Ninevah has more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left, and many cattle as well.  Should I not be concerned about that great city?

3. Men are able to make many choices
(a) Men choose to reject God
Romans 1:18-23, 28 – "The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.

(b) men are urged to choose to be wise and not foolish
Proverbs 8:1 – "Does not wisdom call out?  Does not understanding raise her voice?"

Proverbs 9:10-12 –"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.  For through me your days will be many and years will be added to your life.  If you are wise, you wisdom will reward you; if you are a mocker, you alone will suffer."

(c) men can choose to resist God's Spirit
Acts 7:51 – "You stiff-necked people, with uncircumcised hearts and ears!  You are just like your fathers:  You always resist the Holy Spirit!"

Matthew 12:31,32 – "And so I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.  Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age of in the age to come."

Hebrews 6:4-8 – "It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the power of the coming age, if they fall away, to be brought back to repentance, because to their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace.  Land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is farmed receives the blessing of God.  But land that produces thorns and thistles is worthless and is in danger of being cursed.  In the end it will be burned."

(d) sinful man can choose how sinful he is going to be
Romans 2:14,15 – "(Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law, since they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them.)"

(e) Men can choose how hardened to God they are going to be
Matthew 11:20-24 – "Then Jesus began to denounce the cities in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent.  Woe to you, Korazin!  Woe to you, Bethsaida!  If the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.  But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.  And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to the skies?  No, you will go down to the depths..  If the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day.  But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you."

Zechariah 7:12 - "They made their hearts as hard as flint and would not listen to the law or to the words that the Lord Almighty had sent by his Spirit through the earlier prophets.  So the Lord Almighty was very angry."

John 12:37, 38 - Even after Jesus had done all these miraculous signs in their presence, they still would not believe in him.

Matthew 13:18-23 – "Listen then to what the parable of sower means:  When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart.  This is the seed sown along the path.  The one who received the seed that fell on rocky places is the man who hears the word and at once receives it with joy.  But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time.  When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away.  The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the work but the worries of this life and deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful.  But the one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it.  He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown."

4. Men are given invitations to choose God

Hosea 10:12 – "Sow for yourselves righteousness, reap the fruit of unfailing love, and break up your unplowed ground; for it is time to seek the Lord, until he comes and showers righteousness on you."

Ezekiel 3:4-11 –  "He said to me:  'Son of man, go now to the house of Israel and speak my words to them.  You are not being sent to a people of obscure speech and difficult language, but to the house of Israel---not to many peoples of obscure speech and difficult language, whose words you cannot understand.  Surely if I had sent you to them, they would have listened to you.  But the house of Israel is not willing to listen to you because they are not willing to listen to me, for the whole house of Israel is hardened and obstinate.  But, I will make you as unyielding and hardened as they are.  I will make your forehead like the hardest stone, harder than flint.  Do not be afraid of them or terrified by them, though they are a rebellious house.  And he said to me, 'Son of man, listen carefully and take to heart all the words I speak to you.  Go now to your countrymen in exile and speak to them.  Say to them 'this is what the Sovereign Lord says, whether they listen or fail to listen."

Matthew 11:28 – "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."

John 7:37,38 – "On the last and the greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, 'If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.  Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, steams of living water will flow from within him."

Revelation 22:17 – "The Spirit and the Bride say, 'Come!'  And let him who hears say, 'Come!'  Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life."

5. We are saved when we choose a Savior

Unconditional Election

Limited Atonement

worthless and is in danger of being cursed.  In the end it will be burned."

Hebrews 10:26-31 – "If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God.  Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.  How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God under foot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace?  For we know him who said, 'It is mine to avenge; I will repay, and again, 'The Lord will judge his people.  It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God."

(5) A man can choose to persist in sin and rebellion against God and lose his salvation
Galatians 5:4 – "You who are trying to be justified by law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace."

But land that produces thorns and thistles is
worthless and is in danger of being cursed.

II Peter 2:22 – "Of them the proverbs are true: 'A dog returns to its vomit,' and "A sow that is washed goes back to her wallowing in the mud."

Revelation 3:5 – "He who overcomes will, like them, be dressed in white.  I will never blot out his name from the book of life, but will acknowledge his name before my Father and his angels."

Revelation 22:19 – "And if anyone takes words away from this book of prophecy, God will take away from him his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book."

(1) Men and women are dead in sin that they have a propensity to sin (but not a necessity to sin)
men are sinful in their desires
Psalm 51:5 – "Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me."

Psalm 58:3 – "Even from birth the wicked go astray; from the womb they are wayward and speak lies."

Romans 8:7 – "the sinful mind is hostile to God.  It does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so."

but they do not have to do every sin they have a desire to do (each man is sinful by nature, but each man chooses how sinful he is going to be.  Man is totally depraved, but not necessarily utterly depraved)

Genesis 6:5 – "The Lord saw how great man's wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time."

Though men are incapable of freeing themselves from their slavery to sin, they are able with God's help to despise their sinfulness and desire to be free from it.
Acts 2:37 – "When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, 'Brothers, what shall we do?"

Luke 18:13,14 – "But the tax collector stood at a distance.  He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, 'God, be merciful to me a sinner.'  I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God.  For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."

Acts 16:30 – "He then brought them out and asked, 'Sirs, what must I do to be saved?'

Matthew 5:3-6 – "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for there is the kingdom of heaven.  Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.  Blessed are the meek, for their will inherit the earth.  Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled."

Matthew 11:28-30 – "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."

John 4:10 – "Jesus answered her, 'If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.'"

John 6:35 – "Then Jesus declared, 'I am the bread of life.  He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty."

Luke 15:17-21 – "When he came to his senses, he said, 'How many of my father's hired men have food to spare, and here I am starving to death!  I will set out and go back to my father and say to him:  Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.  I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired men.'  So he got up and went to his father.  'But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.  The son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.  I am no longer worthy to be called your son."

Because the Bible talks about degrees of punishment for non-believers, we can be confident that man can choose how sinful he is going to be
Matthew 11:20-24 - "Then Jesus began to denounce the cities in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent.

Romans 2:6 – "God will give to each person according to what he has done."

Each time men choose wickedness over good, they harden and darken their own hearts
Romans 1:28 - Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done."

Ephesians 4:17-19 – "So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking.  They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts.  Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more."

John 12:37-40 - Even after Jesus had done all these miraculous signs in their presence, they still would not believe in him.  This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet:  'Lord, who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?'  For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere: 'He has blinded their eyes and deadened their hearts, so they can neither see with their eyes, nor understand with their hearts, nor turn---and I would heal them.'"

(2) Just as before the world God determined according to his foreknowledge that Jesus would die by the hands of wicked men who would freely choose to kill Him,
Acts 2:23 – "This man was handed over to you by God's set purpose and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross."

so God determined beforehand according to His foreknowledge to work all things together for good for those who would love Him and those who would ultimately become conformed to the image of His Son
Romans 8:28-30 – "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who have been called according to his purpose.  For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.  And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified."

How God is working to bring Israel to a place of humility is a picture of this humbling process
Daniel 12:7 – "The man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, lifted his right hand and his left hand toward heaven, and I heard him swear by him who lives forever, saying, 'It will be for a time, times and half a time."  When the power of the holy people has been finally broken all these things will be completed."

Zechariah 12:10 – "And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication.  They will look on me the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a first-born son."

Deuteronomy 8:2,3 - Remember how the Lord  your God led you all the way in the desert these forty years, to humble you and to test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands.  He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your fathers had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord."

Ephesians 1:4,5 – "For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.  In love he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will---"

II Timothy 1:9 – "who has saved us and called us to a holy life--- not because of anything that we have done, but because of his own purpose and grace.  This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time"

3) Jesus Christ died for all men, though not all men choose His gift of forgiveness and eternal life
John 3:16-19 – "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.  For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.  Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.  This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil."

I Timothy 2:1,3,4 –  "I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone….This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth."

I John 2:2 – "He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world."

II Peter 3:9 – "The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness.  He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance."

Acts 17:30 – "In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent."

Hebrews 2:9 - "But we see Jesus, who was a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone."

II Peter 2:1 – "But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you.  They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord, who bought them

Luke 23:34 – "Jesus said, 'Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing…"

4) Men do not seek God, but God seeks men
Luke 19:10 – "For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost."

John 3:17 – "For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the word, but to save the world through him."

Romans 10:20 – "And Isaiah boldly says, 'I was found by those who did not seek me; I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me."

Matthew 23:37 – "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing."

Nevertheless, men still can and do resist God's seeking of them:
Matthew 12:31,32 – "And so I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.  Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come."

Acts 7:51 – "You stiff-necked people, with uncircumcised hearts and ears!  You are just like your fathers:  You always resist the Holy Spirit!"

Proverbs 29:1 – "A man who remains stiff-necked after many rebukes will suddenly be destroyed---without remedy."

John 9:41 – "Jesus said, "If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains."

Only a few choose the narrow path
Matthew 7:13,14 – "Enter through the narrow gate.  For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it,  But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it."

John 6:66 – "From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him."

Only those who are willing to acknowledge their sinfulness before a holy God will come to Him who alone can save them
Luke 18:13,14 – "But the tax collector stood at a distance.  He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, 'God, be merciful to me a sinner.'  I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God.  For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."

Matthew 5:3-6 – "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.  Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.  Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.  Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled."

God must open our hearts spiritually before we will understand the gospel message
Acts 16:14 – "One of those listening was a woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth from the city of Thyatira, who was a worshiper of God.  The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul's message."

Matthew 16:15-17 – "But what about you?'  he asked.  'Who do you say I am?'  Simon Peter answered, 'You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.'  Jesus replied, 'Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by men, but by my Father in heaven."

John 6:65 – "He went on to say, 'This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled him."

Those who die the second death are those who stubbornly resist God's seeking of them until the end
Zechariah 7:12 - "They made their hearts as hard as flint and would not listen to the law or to the words that the Lord Almighty had sent by his Spirit through the earlier prophets.  So the Lord Almighty was very angry."

Matthew 23:37 – "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing."

Revelation 22:11 – "Let him who does wrong continue to do wrong; let him who is vile continue to be vile; let him who does right continue to do right; and let him who is holy continue to be holy."

But land that produces thorns and thistles is
worthless and is in danger of being cursed.  In the end it will be burned."

II Thessalonians 2:10-12 – "and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing.  They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.  For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness."

Romans 2:5 – "But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God's wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed."

I Timothy 4:2 – "Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron."

Those who choose to believe in Him are born again
John 1:11-13 – "He can to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.  Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God---children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God."

Romans 6:17,18 – "But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching to which you were entrusted.  You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness."

Acts 2:38 – "Peter replied, 'Repent and be baptized every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.  And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."

The Bible is filled with invitation verses to those who been humbled, like the Prodigal Son, and are hungry and thirsty for a relation with God

Jeremiah 29:11-14 – "For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.  Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.  You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.  I will be found by you,' declares the Lord, 'and will bring you back from captivity.  I will gather your from all the nations and places where I have banished you,' declares the Lord, 'and will bring you back to the place from which I carried you into exile.'

Ezekiel 18:30-32 – "….Repent!  Turn away from all your offenses; then sin will not be your downfall.  Rid yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heart and a new spirit.  Why will you die, O house of Israel?  For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign Lord.  Repent and live!"

John 3:16-18 – "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.  For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.  Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son."

5) Those who become truly born-again children of God will never lose their salvation
Romans 8:28-39 - "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who have been called according to his purpose.  For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.  And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.  What, then, shall we say in response to this?  If God is for us, who can be against us?  He who did not spare his own son, but gave him up for us all---how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?  Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen?  It is God who justifies.  Who is he that condemns?  Christ Jesus, who died---more that that, who was raised to life---is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.  Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?  Shall trouble or nakedness or danger of sword?.....For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels or demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

John 10:27-30 – "My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.  I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand.  My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father's hand.  I and the Father are one."

Their world view summarized
(1) Men are slaves to sin and unable to free themselves from this slavery
Romans 3:10-12 – "As it is written:  'there is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God.  All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one."

Romans 8:7 – "the sinful mind is hostile to God.  It does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so."

But God draws us to Himself in many ways:
(a) by lifting up Jesus Christ on the cross
John 12:32 – "But I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself."

(b) with His love
Jeremiah 31:3 – "The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying: 'I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with loving-kindness."

(c) through the convictions of the Holy Spirit
John 16:8-10 – "When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the father, where you can see me no longer; and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned."

I Thessalonians 1:4-6 – "For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you, because our gospel came to you not simply with words, but also with power with the Holy Spirit and with deep conviction…you welcomed the message with the joy given by the Holy Spirit."

(d) through the discipline of parents
Proverbs 3:11,12 – "My son, do not despise the Lord's discipline and do not resent his rebuke, because the Lord disciplines those he loves as a father the son he delights in."

Proverbs 6:23 – "For these commands are a lamp, this teaching is a light, and the corrections of discipline are the way to life,"

Proverbs 10:17 – "He who heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray."

Proverbs 22:6 – "Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it."

Proverbs 22:15 – "Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline will drive it far from him."

Proverbs 23:13,14 – "Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you punish him with the rod, he will not die.  Punish him with the rod and save his soul from death."

Proverbs 29:15 – "The rod of correction imparts wisdom, but a child left to himself disgraces his mother.

(e) through the suffering and the trials of life
Romans 8:18-22 – "I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.  The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed.  For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God.  We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time."

Deuteronomy 8:3-5 – "He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your fathers had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.  Your clothes did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years.  Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the Lord your God disciplines you."

Proverbs 6:23 – "For these commands are a lamp, this teaching is a light, and the corrections of discipline are the way to life,"

Proverbs 20:30 – "Blows and wounds cleanse away evil, and beatings purge the inmost being."

I Corinthians 14:24,25 – "But if an unbeliever or someone who does not understand comes in while everybody is prophesying, he will be convinced by all that he is a sinner and will be judged by all," and the secrets of his heart will be laid bare.  So he will fall down and worship God, exclaiming, 'god is really among you."

Jeremiah 4:3,4 – "This is what the Lord says to the men of Judah and Jerusalem: 'Break up your unplowed ground and do not sow among thorns.  Circumcise yourselves to the Lord, circumcise your hears, you men of Judah and people of Jerusalem, or my wrath will break out and burn like fire because of the evil you have done---burn with no one to quench it."

Hosea 10:12 – "Sow for yourselves righteousness, reap the fruit of unfailing love, and break up your unplowed ground; for it is time to seek the Lord, until he comes and showers righteousness on you."

(g) through God's law
Romans 3:19,20 – "Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced, and the whole world held accountable to God.  Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin."

Romans 5:20,21 – "The law was added so that the trespass might increase.  But where sin increase, grace increased all the more, so that just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."

(h) through the godly testimony of Christians
Matthew 5:13-16 – "You are the salt of the earth.  But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?  It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.  'You are the light of the world.  A city on a hill cannot be hidden.  Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl.  Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.  In the same way, let your light shine before me, that they may see your good deeds, and praise your Father in heaven."

John 13:35 –"By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."

John 17:20-23 – "My prayer is not for them alone.  I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them will be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you.  May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.  I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one.  I in them and you in me.  May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me."

Acts 2:47 – "praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people.  And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved."

(i) through God's kindness

Colossians 4:3,4 – "And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains.  Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should."

II Corinthians 2:14-16 – "But thanks be to God who always leads in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him.  For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.  To the one we are the smell of death; to the other the fragrance of life…."

(k) through our emptiness without God
Ecclesiastes 1:2,3 – "Meaningless!  Meaningless!' says the Teacher.  'Utterly meaningless!  Everything is meaningless.'  What does man gain from all his labors at which he toil under the sun?.....I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind."

(l) through the light of Jesus' life

(m) through jealousy when others come to Christ

(n) through prayer

Colossians 4:3,4 – "And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains.  Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should."

(o) through the stubbornness of God's spokesmen
Ezekiel 3:7-9 – "But the house of Israel is not willing to listen to you because they are not willing to listen to me, for the whole house of Israel is hardened and obstinate.  But I will make you as unyielding and hardened as they are.  I will make your forehead like the hardest stone, harder than flint.  Do not be afraid of them or terrified by them, though they are a rebellious house."

Ephesians 6:19,20 – "Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains.  Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should."

(q) through government
Romans 13:4,5 – "For he is God's servant to do you good.  But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing.  He is God's servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.  Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also because of conscience."

(r) through everything in life
Romans 8:18-22,28 – "I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.  The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed.  For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God.  We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time……And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."

Those who have chosen to humble and not harden themselves are ripe for harvest
John 4:35,36 – "Do not say, 'Four months more and then the harvest'?  I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields!  They are ripe for harvest.  Even now the reapers draws his wages, even now he harvests the crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together."

(4) Though God seeks men, men can and do voluntarily choose to harden themselves to Him and to the conviction and work of the Spirit

Matthew 23:37 – "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing."

How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God under foot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified him and who has insulted the Spirit of grace.  For we know him who said, 'It is mine to avenge; I will repay, and again, 'The Lord will judge his people.  It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God."

Man's part is to cry out for help
Luke 18:13,14 – "But the tax collector stood at a distance.  He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, 'God, be merciful to me a sinner.'  I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God.  For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."

Acts 16:30 – "He, then brought them out and asked, 'Sirs, what must I do to be saved?"

This is not meritorious and is not a work
Romans 3:27 – "Where, then, is boasting?  It is excluded.  On what principle?  On that of observing the law?  No, but on that of faith."
