THE INVISIBLE SPIRITUAL WAR VERSES

THE ENEMY

1. His names:

Matthew 4:10 – "Jesus said to him, "Away from me, Satan! For it is written: 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.'

I Peter 5:8-9 - " Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.  Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings."

Matthew 13:39 - "and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels."

John 8:44 – "You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies."

Ephesians 2:2 – "in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient."

Revelation 12:10 – "Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: "Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ.  For the accuser of our brothers, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down."

Matthew 13:19,38 – "When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sown along the path…..The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one,"

Matthew 4:3 – "The tempter came to him and said, "If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread."

I Thessalonians 3:5 – "For this reason, when I could stand it no longer, I sent Timothy to find out about your faith. I was afraid that in some way the tempter might have tempted you and our efforts might have been useless."

Colossians 1:13 – "For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves,"

John 12:31 – "Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out."

II Corinthians 4:4 – "The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God."

2. His origin and fall:

Ezekiel 28:11-15a – "The word of the LORD came to me: "Son of man, take up a lament concerning the king of Tyre and say to him: 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: 'You were the model of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.  You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone adorned you: ruby, topaz and emerald, chrysolite, onyx and jasper, sapphire, turquoise and beryl.  Your settings and mountings were made of gold; on the day you were created they were prepared.  You were anointed as a guardian cherub, for so I ordained you.  You were on the holy mount of God; you walked among the fiery stones.  You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created"

Ezekiel 28:15b-19 – "You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created till wickedness was found in you.  Through your widespread trade you were filled with violence, and you sinned.  So I drove you in disgrace from the mount of God, and I expelled you, O guardian cherub, from among the fiery stones.  Your heart became proud on account of your beauty, and you corrupted your wisdom because of your splendor.  So I threw you to the earth; I made a spectacle of you before kings.  By your many sins and dishonest trade you have desecrated your sanctuaries.  So I made a fire come out from you, and it consumed you, and I reduced you to ashes on the ground in the sight of all who were watching.  All the nations who knew you are appalled at you; you have come to a horrible end and will be no more.' "

Isaiah 14:12-17 – "How you have fallen from heaven, O morning star, son of the dawn!  You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations!  You said in your heart, "I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of the sacred mountain.  I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High."  But you are brought down to the grave, to the depths of the pit.  Those who see you stare at you, they ponder your fate: "Is this the man who shook the earth and made kingdoms tremble, the man who made the world a desert, who overthrew its cities and would not let his captives go home?"

3. Heart:

I John 3:4,8 – "Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness….He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil's work."

Daniel 7:25 – "He will speak against the Most High and oppress his saints and try to change the set times and the laws. The saints will be handed over to him for a time, times and half a time."

II Thessalonians 2:3-4 – "Don't let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction.  He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God's temple, proclaiming himself to be God."

Ephesians 6:16 – "In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one."

John 8:44 – "You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies."

Revelation 9:11 – "They had as king over them the angel of the Abyss, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek, Apollyon." [Abaddon and Apollyon mean "destroyer"]

Revelation 13:5-6 – "The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies and to exercise his authority for forty-two months.  He opened his mouth to blaspheme God, and to slander his name and his dwelling place and those who live in heaven."
4. His goals:

     Deception:

     False doctrine:
Ephesians 4:14 – "Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming."

I Timothy 4:1-3 – "The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.  Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.  They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth."

     False Jesuses:
I John 2:22 – "Who is the liar? It is the man who denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a man is the antichrist--he denies the Father and the Son."

I John 4:1-3 – "Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.  This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world."

II Corinthians 11:4 – "For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough."

     False gods and false worship:
II Thessalonians 2:4 – "He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God's temple, proclaiming himself to be God."

     False godliness:
II Timothy 3:5 – "having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them."

     False spirituality:
Deuteronomy 18:9-12 – "When you enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there.  Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead.  Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD , and because of these detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you."

Leviticus 20:6,27 - " 'I will set my face against the person who turns to mediums and spiritists to prostitute himself by following them, and I will cut him off from his people.  'A man or woman who is a medium or spiritist among you must be put to death. You are to stone them; their blood will be on their own heads.' "

Colossians 2:16-19, 20-23 – "Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day.  These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.  Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you for the prize. Such a person goes into great detail about what he has seen, and his unspiritual mind puffs him up with idle notions.  He has lost connection with the Head, from whom the whole body, supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow…..Since you died with Christ to the basic principles of this world, why, as though you still belonged to it, do you submit to its rules: 'Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!'?  These are all destined to perish with use, because they are based on human commands and teachings.  Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence."

     False miracles:
II Thessalonians 2:9 – "The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders,"

Matthew 24:24 – "For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect--if that were possible."

     False Christians:
Matthew 13:2424-26, 36-39 – "Jesus told them another parable: 'The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field.  But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away.  When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared.  Then he left the crowd and went into the house….His disciples came to him and said, 'Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field.'  He answered, The one who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man.  The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one, and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels."

Act 20:28-30 – "Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers.  Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood.  I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock.   Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them."

     False Prophesy:
Deuteronomy 18:22 – "If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the LORD does not take place or come true, that is a message the LORD has not spoken. That prophet has spoken presumptuously. Do not be afraid of him."

Jeremiah 23:16-18,21,22, 25-30 - This is what the LORD Almighty says:  'Do not listen to what the prophets are prophesying to you; they fill you with false hopes.  They speak visions from their own minds, not from the mouth of the LORD .  They keep saying to those who despise me, 'The LORD says: You will have peace.'  And to all who follow the stubbornness of their hearts they say, 'No harm will come to you.'  But which of them has stood in the council of the LORD to see or to hear his word?  Who has listened and heard his word?.....I did not send these prophets, yet they have run with their message; I did not speak to them, yet they have prophesied.  But if they had stood in my council, they would have proclaimed my words to my people and would have turned them from their evil ways and from their evil deeds……'I have heard what the prophets say who prophesy lies in my name. They say, 'I had a dream! I had a dream!'  How long will this continue in the hearts of these lying prophets, who prophesy the delusions of their own minds?  They think the dreams they tell one another will make my people forget my name, just as their fathers forgot my name through Baal worship.  Let the prophet who has a dream tell his dream, but let the one who has my word speak it faithfully. For what has straw to do with grain?' declares the LORD .  'Is not my word like fire,' declares the LORD, 'and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces?  'Therefore,' declares the LORD , 'I am against the prophets who steal from one another words supposedly from me."

     False happiness:
Jude 4 - For certain men whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are godless men, who change the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord."

Revelation 2:20 – "Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess. By her teaching she misleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols."

     False teachers:
II Corinthians 11:13-15 – "For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, masquerading as apostles of Christ.  And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.  It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve."

     Accusation:
Job 1:8-11, 2:3-6 – "Then the LORD said to Satan, 'Have you considered my servant Job?  There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.'  'Does Job fear God for nothing?' Satan replied.  'Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land.  But stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face.' ….Then the LORD said to Satan, 'Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil. And he still maintains his integrity, though you incited me against him to ruin him without any reason.'  'Skin for skin!' Satan replied. 'A man will give all he has for his own life.  But stretch out your hand and strike his flesh and bones, and he will surely curse you to your face.'  The LORD said to Satan, 'Very well, then, he is in your hands; but you must spare his life.' "

Zechariah 3:1-3 - Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD , and Satan standing at his right side to accuse him.  The LORD said to Satan, 'The LORD rebuke you, Satan! The LORD , who has chosen Jerusalem, rebuke you! Is not this man a burning stick snatched from the fire?'  Now Joshua was dressed in filthy clothes as he stood before the angel.' "

I John 2:1-2 – "My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense--Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.  He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world."

Revelation 12:10 – "Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say:  'Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ.  For the accuser of our brothers, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down."

Colossians 2:13-16 – "When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross.  And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.  Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day."

II Corinthians 10:10 – "For some say, "His letters are weighty and forceful, but in person he is unimpressive and his speaking amounts to nothing."

II Corinthians 2:10-11 – "If you forgive anyone, I also forgive him. And what I have forgiven--if there was anything to forgive--I have forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake, in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes."

Ephesians 4:26-27 – "In your anger do not sin: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold."

Romans 8:15 – "For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship.  And by him we cry, "Abba, Father."

Hebrews 2:14,15 – "Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death--that is, the devil--and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death."

Matthew 27:3-5 – "When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty silver coins to the chief priests and the elders.  'I have sinned,' he said, 'for I have betrayed innocent blood.'  'What is that to us?' they replied. 'That's your responsibility.'  So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself."

I Timothy 4:1-5 – "The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.  Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.  They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth.  For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer."

I John 3:12-13 – "Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother's were righteous.  Do not be surprised, my brothers, if the world hates you."

Revelation 20:4 – "I saw thrones on which were seated those who had been given authority to judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony for Jesus and because of the word of God. They had not worshiped the beast or his image and had not received his mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ a thousand years."

John 8:44 – "You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies."

And he was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him."

4. Their nature:
    They are persons:
    They have names:
Mark 5:9 – "Then Jesus asked him, 'What is your name?' "

     They have individual personalities:
I Kings 22:20-23 – "And the Lord said, ‘Who will entice Ahab into attacking Ramoth Gilead and going to his death there?’ “One suggested this, and another that. Finally, a spirit came forward, stood before the Lord and said, ‘I will entice him.’ “‘By what means?’ the Lord asked. “‘I will go out and be a lying spirit in the mouths of all his prophets,’ he said. “‘You will succeed in enticing him,’ said the Lord. ‘Go and do it.’ “So now the Lord has put a lying spirit in the mouths of all these prophets of yours. The Lord has decreed disaster for you.”"

James 2:19 – "You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that–and shudder."

     They have wills:
Matthew 12:43-44 - "When an evil spirit comes out of a man, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it.  Then it says, 'I will return to the house I left.' When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order."

Mark 5:11-13 – "A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside.  The demons begged Jesus, 'Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them.'  He gave them permission, and the evil spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned."

     They have speech:
Mark 1:23-24 – "Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an evil spirit cried out, 'What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God!' "

Luke 4:33,34 – "In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an evil spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice, 'Ha! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God!' "

Act 19:13-16 – "Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, 'In the name of Jesus, whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.'  Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this.  One day the evil spirit answered them, 'Jesus I know, and I know about Paul, but who are you?'  Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding."

     They are unclean:
Mark 1:23,26,27 – "Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an evil spirit cried out, the evil spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.  The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, 'What is this? A new teaching--and with authority! He even gives orders to evil spirits and they obey him.' "

They are able to indwell a man and control him:
I Kings 22:20-23 – "And the LORD said, 'Who will entice Ahab into attacking Ramoth Gilead and going to his death there?'  One suggested this, and another that. Finally, a spirit came forward, stood before the LORD and said, 'I will entice him.'  'By what means?' the LORD asked. 'I will go out and be a lying spirit in the mouths of all his prophets,' he said. 'You will succeed in enticing him,' said the LORD . 'Go and do it.'  So now the LORD has put a lying spirit in the mouths of all these prophets of yours. The LORD has decreed disaster for you."

Matthew 12:29 - "Or again, how can anyone enter a strong man's house and carry off his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can rob his house."

I John 5:18 – "We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the one who was born of God keeps him safe, and the evil one cannot harm him."

They vary in degrees of wickedness
Matthew 12:45 – "Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that man is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation."

5. Their diversity
Principalities, powers, rulers of darkness, and spiritual wickedness in
high places:
Ephesians 6:12 – "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms."

Daniel 10:13,20 – "But the prince of the Persian kingdom resisted me twenty-one days. Then Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, because I was detained there with the king of Persia……So he said, "Do you know why I have come to you? Soon I will return to fight against the prince of Persia, and when I go, the prince of Greece will come;"

     Different functions:
     Lying:

     Blind and dumb spirits:
Matthew 22:22 – "Then they brought him a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute, and Jesus healed him, so that he could both talk and see."

Luke 11:14 – "Jesus was driving out a demon that was mute. When the demon left, the man who had been mute spoke, and the crowd was amazed."

6. Their present location:

     Imprisoned:
II Peter 2:4 – "For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell, putting them into gloomy dungeons to be held for judgment;"

Jude 6-7 – "And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their own home--these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day.  In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire."
In the Abyss:
Luke 8:31 –  " 'Legion,' he replied, because many demons had gone into him. And they begged him repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss."

Revelation 9:1-3,11 – "The fifth angel sounded his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from the sky to the earth. The star was given the key to the shaft of the Abyss.  When he opened the Abyss, smoke rose from it like the smoke from a gigantic furnace. The sun and sky were darkened by the smoke from the Abyss.  And out of the smoke locusts came down upon the earth and were given power like that of scorpions of the earth….They had as king over them the angel of the Abyss, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek, Apollyon."

Revelation 20:3,7,8 – "He threw him into the Abyss, and locked and sealed it over him, to keep him from deceiving the nations anymore until the thousand years were ended. After that, he must be set free for a short time.  When the thousand years are over, Satan will be released from his prison and will go out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the earth--Gog and Magog--to gather them for battle. In number they are like the sand on the seashore."

7. What they can do:
Entice men to worship them:
Deuteronomy 32:16,17 – "They made him jealous with their foreign gods and angered him with their detestable idols.  They sacrificed to demons, which are not God-gods they had not known, gods that recently appeared, gods your fathers did not fear."

Hosea 4:12, 5:4 - "….They consult a wooden idol and are answered by a stick of wood.  A spirit of prostitution leads them astray; they are unfaithful to their God. . . . “Their deeds do not permit them to return to their God. A spirit of prostitution is in their heart; they do not acknowledge the Lord."

Psalm 106:36-38 – "They worshiped their idols, which became a snare to them.  They sacrificed their sons and their daughters to demons.  They shed innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan,
and the land was desecrated by their blood."

I Corinthians 10:20 – "No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God, and I do not want you to be participants with demons."

     Propagate false wisdom:
James 3:14-16 - "But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth.  Such 'wisdom' does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil.  For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice."

     Propagate their own doctrine:
I Timothy 4:1-4 – "The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.  Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.  They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth.  For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving,"

     Perform counterfeit miracles:
II Thessalonians 2:9 – "The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders,"

Revelation 13:13,15 – "And he performed great and miraculous signs, even causing fire to come down from heaven to earth in full view of men….He was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that it could speak and cause all who refused to worship the image to be killed."

Exodus 7:10-12, 8:18,19, 9:11 – "So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as the LORD commanded. Aaron threw his staff down in front of Pharaoh and his officials, and it became a snake.  Pharaoh then summoned wise men and sorcerers, and the Egyptian magicians also did the same things by their secret arts:  Each one threw down his staff and it became a snake. But Aaron's staff swallowed up their staffs…..But when the magicians tried to produce gnats by their secret arts, they could not. And the gnats were on men and animals.  The magicians said to Pharaoh, 'This is the finger of God.'  But Pharaoh's heart was hard and he would not listen, just as the LORD had said…..The magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils that were on them and on all the Egyptians."

     Torment, trouble and oppress people:
Luke 6:18 – "who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases.  Those troubled by evil spirits were cured,"

Acts 5:16 – "Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by evil spirits, and all of them were healed."

Move people to self-indulgence and sexual immorality:
Revelation 18:2,3 – "With a mighty voice he shouted: 'Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great!  She has become a home for demons and a haunt for every evil spirit, a haunt for every unclean and detestable bird.  For all the nations have drunk the maddening wine of her adulteries.  The kings of the earth committed adultery with her, and the merchants of the earth grew rich from her excessive luxuries.' "

     Cause physical problems:
Matthew 9:32,33 – "While they were going out, a man who was demon-possessed and could not talk was brought to Jesus.  And when the demon was driven out, the man who had been mute spoke. The crowd was amazed and said, 'Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.' "

Matthew 12:22 – "Then they brought him a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute, and Jesus healed him, so that he could both talk and see."

Matthew 17:15-18 - " 'Lord, have mercy on my son,' he said. 'He has seizures and is suffering greatly. He often falls into the fire or into the water. 16I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him.'  'O unbelieving and perverse generation,' Jesus replied, 'how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.'  Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed from that moment."

Luke 13:11 – "and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all."

Move people to attack and even murder someone:
Revelation 18:2,24 – "With a mighty voice he shouted: 'Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great!  She has become a home for demons and a haunt for every evil spirit, a haunt for every unclean and detestable bird……In her was found the blood of prophets and of the saints, and of all who have been killed on the earth."

     Lead countries to war:
Revelation 16:14 – "They are spirits of demons performing miraculous signs, and they go out to the kings of the whole world, to gather them for the battle on the great day of God Almighty."

     Enslave people to fear:
II Timothy 1:7 – "For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline."

     Predict the future:
Acts 16:16-18 – "Once when we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling.  This girl followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, 'These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved.'  She kept this up for many days. Finally Paul became so troubled that he turned around and said to the spirit, 'In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!'  At that moment the spirit left her."

     Impersonate the dead:
I Samuel 28:7 – "Saul then said to his attendants, 'Find me a woman who is a medium, so I may go and inquire of her.' 'There is one in Endor,' they said.  So Saul disguised himself, putting on other clothes, and at night he and two men went to the woman. “Consult a spirit for me,” he said, “and bring up for me the one I name.”"

Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD , and because of these detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before.

Create a spirit of eeriness:
Job 4:14,15 – "fear and trembling seized me and made all my bones shake.  A spirit glided past my face, and the hair on my body stood on end."

OUR ARMY AND OUR WARFARE

We are more than conquerors:
Matthew 16:18 – "And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it."

II Corinthians 2:14 - "But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him."

II Corinthians 10:3-6 - "For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. And we will be ready to punish every act of disobedience, once your obedience is complete."

Our victory in Christ:
1. In His death and resurrection:
Colossians 1:13-14 – "For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption,[1] the forgiveness of sins."

Colossians 2:13-15 – "When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross.  And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross."

Hebrews 2:14-15 – "Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death--that is, the devil-- and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death."

2. In his exaltation and victory:
I Peter 3:22 – "who has gone into heaven and is at God’s right hand—with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him."

Ephesians 1:19-2:7 – "and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.  And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.  As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.  All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath.  But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions--it is by grace you have been saved.  And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus."

How to stand in our victory:
1. Be strong in Christ:
Ephesians 6:10 – "Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power."

2. Put on the full armor of God:
Ephesians 6:11-18 - Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes.  For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.  Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.  Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.  In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.  Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.  And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints."

Additional guidelines for warfare:
1. Remember Satan is under God's control:
Job 1:10-12, 2:3-6 - " 'Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land. But stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face.'  The LORD said to Satan, 'Very well, then, everything he has is in your hands, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.'  Then Satan went out from the presence of the LORD…..Then the LORD said to Satan, 'Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil. And he still maintains his integrity, though you incited me against him to ruin him without any reason.' 'Skin for skin!' Satan replied. 'A man will give all he has for his own life.  But stretch out your hand and strike his flesh and bones, and he will surely curse you to your face.'  The LORD said to Satan, 'Very well, then, he is in your hands; but you must spare his life.' "

II Corinthians 12:7-9 – "To keep me from becoming conceited because of these surpassingly great revelations, there was given me a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me.  Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me.  But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.'  Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me."

I John 2:1,2 – "My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense--Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.  He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world."

Hebrew 7:25 – "Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them."

John 17:15 – "My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one."

Luke 22:31,32 - "Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat.  But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers."

Romans 8:31-39 – "What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us?  He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all--how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?  Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies.  Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died – more than that, who was raised to life – is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.  Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?  As it is written: 'For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.'  No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.  For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

2. Be sober and vigilante:
I Peter 5:8 – "Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour."

3. Test everything:
I Thessalonians 5:20,21 – "do not treat prophecies with contempt.  Test everything. Hold on to the good."

4. Stand against Satan:
I Peter 5:9 – "Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings."

5. The war is to be fought with Christ-like character:
II Timothy 2:24-26 – "And the Lord's servant must not quarrel; instead, he must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful.  Those who oppose him he must gently instruct, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will."

6. We have Jesus Christ's authority to battle in His war:
Matthew 28:18 – "Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me."

7. When we fail in this war we are to gain back our victory:
James 4:1-10– "What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don't they come from your desires that battle within you?  You want something but don't get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask God.  When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.  You adulterous people, don't you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.  Or do you think Scripture says without reason that the spirit he caused to live in us envies intensely?  But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: 'God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.'  Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.  Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.  Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom.  Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up."

Psalm 51:12-17 – "Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.  Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will turn back to you.  Save me from bloodguilt, O God, the God who saves me, and my tongue will sing of your righteousness.  O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise.  You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.  The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise."

8. Expect to triumph;
II Corinthians 2:14 - But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him."

Matthew 16:18 – "And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it."

Romans 16:20 - "The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.
The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you."

I Corinthians 15:58 – "Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain."

Hebrews 11:6 – "And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him."

Galatians 6:9 – "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up."

II Timothy 4:7,8 – "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.  Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day--and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing."
