MAN'S ULTIMATE DESTINY I
HELL - THE TABOO WORD!
VERSES

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE HAVE TO SAY ABOUT HELL?
1. Historical Gehenna:
II Kings 16:3, 21:6, 23:10 – "He walked in the ways of the kings of Israel and even sacrificed his son in the fire, following the detestable ways of the nations the LORD had driven out before the Israelites…..He sacrificed his own son in the fire, practiced sorcery and divination, and consulted mediums and spiritists. He did much evil in the eyes of the Lord, provoking him to anger.
…….He desecrated Topheth, which was in the Valley of Ben Hinnom, so no one could use it to sacrifice his son or daughter in the fire to Molech."

Jeremiah 7:31-32 – "They have built the high places of Topheth in the Valley of Ben Hinnom to burn their sons and daughters in the fire-something I did not command, nor did it enter my mind.  So beware, the days are coming, declares the LORD , when people will no longer call it Topheth or the Valley of Ben Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter, for they will bury the dead in Topheth until there is no more room."

2. Hell, the ultimate horror:
    Gehenna:
Matthew 10:28 - "Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul.  Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both body and soul in hell [Gehenna]."

    The fires of hell:
Matthew 13:40-42 - "As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age.  The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil.  They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

Revelation 20:14-15 – "Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death.  If anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire."

Revelation 21:8 – "But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars--their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death."

    Darkness:
Matthew 8:12 - "But the subjects of the kingdom [Israel] will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

    Prison:
Matthew 18:34-35 - "In anger his master turned him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed."

    Pit:
Psalm 55:23 - "But you, O God, will bring down the wicked into the pit of corruption;"

    Worm does not die
Mark 9:47-48 - "And if you eye causes you to sin, pluck it out.  It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell, where 'their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.'"

    Banishment and separation:
Matthew 8:12 - "But the subjects of the kingdom [Israel] will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

Matthew 25:41 - "then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels."

    Torment and agony:
Revelation 14:10-11 – "he, too, will drink of the wine of God's fury, which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath. He will be tormented with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb.  And the smoke of their torment rises for ever and ever. There is no rest day or night for those who worship the beast and his image, or for anyone who receives the mark of his name."

    Weeping and gnashing of teeth:
Matthew 13:42 – "They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

Matthew 13:49-50 - "this is how it will be at the end of the age.  The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

    Eternal punishment:
Matthew 25:46 - "Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."

Jude 7 - "In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion.  They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire."

Revelation 20:10 – "And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever."

HOW CAN A LOVING GOD SEND SOMEONE TO HELL?
1. It is man's own choice:
Matthew 23:37 - "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing.

Romans 1:28,32 - Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done…..Although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do those very things but also approve of those
who practice them."

2. How can a holy God not send rebellious sinners to hell?
Isaiah 6:5 - "Woe to me!  I cried. 'I am ruined!'  For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty."

Revelation 18:20 – "Rejoice over her, O heaven!  Rejoice, saints and apostles and prophets!  God has judged her for the way she treated you."

God is patient not wanting any to perish:
II Peter 3:9 – "The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance."

    Punishment is God's strange work:
Isaiah 28:21 - "the Lord will rise up as he did at Mount Perazim, he will rouse himself as in the valley of Gibeon---to do his work, his strange work, and perform his task, his alien task."

The judge of all the earth will do right:
Genesis 18:25 – "Far be it from you to do such a thing-to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike. Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?"

WHAT ABOUT UNIVERSALISM, SECOND CHANCES AND ANNIHILATION?
1. Universalism:
Verses used to support this view:
John 12:19, 32 – "So the Pharisees said to one another, 'See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!'  But I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself."

I Timothy 2:3, 4 – "This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth."

I Timothy 4:9, 10 – "This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance (and for this we labor and strive), that we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, and especially of those who believe."

II Peter 3:9 -  "The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance."

    Some problems:
Then there would be no unforgivable sin:
Matthew 12:31, 32 – "And so I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.  Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come."

There would be no narrow door, for everyone would come in:
Matthew 7:13,14 – "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.  But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it."

Jesus laid His life down for His sheep, not for everyone:
John 10:11 –  "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep."

    Only a few are chosen:
Matthew 22:14 - "For many are invited, but few are chosen."

2. Second chances:
The Bible says that after one dies, it is too late to change your mind:
Hebrews 9:27 – "Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment,"

    Purgatory contradicts the Bible:
I John 5:11-13 – "And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.  He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.  I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life."

3. Annihilation:
    Some problems:
    The Bible teaches eternal punishment:
Matthew 25:46 – "Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."

If there is no eternal punishment, there is also no eternal life:
Revelation 14:10-11 – "he, too, will drink of the wine of God's fury, which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath. He will be tormented with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb.  And the smoke of their torment rises for ever and ever. There is no rest day or night for those who worship the beast and his image, or for anyone who receives the mark of his name."

Revelation 20:10-11 – "And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.  Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. Earth and sky fled from his presence, and there was no place for them."

Jude 7 - "In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion.  They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire."
