Old Testament Overview - Israel, God's Kingdom
How did it begin? It began at Mt. Sinai with God's covenant with Israel
(Ex 19:5-6)
Who was its ruler? God was Israel's Ruler—a kingdom ruled by God is called a theocracy.
What was the realm of the kingdom? The nation of Israel was to be a kingdom of priests (Ex 19:3-6) that were to be located in the Promised Land (Canaan)
(Ex 23:23-31; Deut 1:7-8).
What was the method of rule? God would rule through human mediators.
There would be three types of mediators:
(1) kings who ruled under God's rule;
(2) prophets who were God's spokesmen to the people;
(3) priests who were representatives of the people who were mediators between God and man. God was Israel's legislative head—He provided Israel with its constitution (the Law; Deuteronomy 4;12-14). God was Israel's judge (Numbers 15:32-35). God was Israel's military leader (Ex 32;20-27; Josh 5:14-15).
