2. THE BIBLE - OLD TESTAMENT OVERVIEW KEY VERSES

THE BEGINNINGS
Genesis 3:15 - "And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head and you will strike his heel."

THE FATHERS
Genesis 12:1-3 - "The Lord has said to Abram, 'Leave your country, your people and your father's household and go to the land I will show you.  I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great and you will be a blessing.  I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you."

Genesis 49:10 - "The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, until he comes to whom it belongs and the obedience of the nation is his."

THE EXODUS
Exodus 12: 7,13 - "Then they are to take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the doorframes of the houses where they eat the lambs…..The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are; and when I see the blood, I will pass over you.  No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt."
(I Corinthians 5:7b - "For Christ our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.")

Leviticus 17:11 - "For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one's life."  (Hebrews 9:27 - "In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.")

Numbers 9:12 - "They must not leave any of it [the Passover Lamb] or break any of its bones.  When they celebrate the Passover, they must follow all the regulations." (John 19:33,34, 36 - "But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.  Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus' side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water…..These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: 'Not one of his bones will be broken'")

Deuteronomy 18:18,19 - "I will rise up from them a prophet like you from among their brothers; I will put my words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him.  If anyone does not listen to my words that the prophet speaks in my name, I myself will call him to account." (John 6:14 - "After the people saw the miraculous sign that Jesus did, they began to say, 'Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.")

THE CONQUEST OF CANAAN
Joshua 2:18 - "unless, when we enter the land, you have tied this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down…"

JUDGES
THE UNITED KINGDOM
II Samuel 7:16 - "Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever."  (Luke 1:31-33 - "You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus.  He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.  The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.")

THE DIVIDED KINGDOM
Matthew 12:40 (Jonah) - "For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth."

THE SURVIVING KINGDOM
Isaiah 7:14 - "Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign:  The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel." (Matthew 1:22,23 - "All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:  The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel---which means, 'God with us.'")

Isaiah 9:6,7 - "For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders.  And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.  Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end.  He will reign on David's throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever.  The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this."

Micah 5:2 - "But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from old, from ancient times. (or "from days of eternity") (Matthew 1:3-6 - "When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.  When he had called together all the people, chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ was to be born.  'In Bethlehem in Judea,' they replied, 'for this is what the prophet has written:  'But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.'')

THE SURVIVING KINGDOM
Jeremiah 31:31-34 - "'The time is coming,' declares the Lord, 'when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah.  It will not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them,' declares the Lord.  'This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time,' declares the Lord.  'I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts.  I will be their God, and they will be my people.  No longer will a man teach his neighbor, or a man his brother, saying, 'Know the Lord,' because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest,' declares the Lord."

THE BABYLONIAN CAPTIVITY
Daniel 9:25,26 - "Know and understand this: From the issuing of the decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One, the ruler, comes, there will be seven 'sevens,' and sixty-two 'sevens.'…….After the sixty-two sevens, 'the Anointed One will be cut off and will have nothing…."

THE RESTORATION
Zechariah 9:9 - "Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion!  Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem!  See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey." (John 12:14,15 - "Jesus found a donkey and sat upon it, as it is written, 'Do not be afraid, O Daughter of Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey's colt.'" and Matthew 21:4,5)

Zechariah 11:12,13 - "I told them, 'If you think it best, give me my pay; but if not, keep it."  So they paid me thirty pieces of silver.  And the Lord said, 'Throw it to the potter---the handsome price at which they priced me!  So It took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them into the house of Lord to the potter." (Matthew 26:14 - "Then one of the Twelve---the one called Judas Isariot---went to the chief priests and asked, 'What are you willing to give me if I hand him over to you?'  So they counted out for him thirty silver coins."  Matthew 27:3-8 - "When Judas who betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty silver coins to the chief priests and the elders.  'I have sinned,' he said, 'for I have betrayed innocent blood.'  'What is that to us?' they replied.  'That is your responsibility.'  The chief priests picked up the coins and said, 'It is against the law to put this into the treasure, since it is blood money.'  So they decided to use the money to buy the potter's field as a burial place for foreigners.  That is why it has been called the Field of Blood to this day.")

Zechariah 12:10 - "And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication.  They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a first-born son."

Malachi 4:5,6 - "See, I will send you the prophet Elijah before the great and dreadful day of the Lord comes.  He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers; or else I will come and strike the land with a curse."
