31-40 - Digging For Gold
-
His early promise (9-12):
He was impressive in stature (9:1-2); was considerate of his father (9:5); was modest (9:21, 10:22); was prepared and empowered by God (10:6, 9-10); was gentle (10:27, 11:13); and was courageous (11:6, 11).
His wandering heart (13-18)
1. His impatient, unbelieving heart (13:8-12) (His focus was on himself and his problems, and not on the Problem-solver.)
2. His foolish heart (14:24-30) (He foolishly chose to follow his own wisdom and not the wisdom from God. See Prov. 11:14, 12;15, 20:18) (We see the foolishness of his choice in 14:31-33, 43-44)
3. His disobedient heart (15:1-11) (He obeyed God only to the degree that it fulfilled his own desires—he obeyed God when it was convenient and disobeyed God when it was not convenient for him to obey God.
4. His deceitful heart (15:12-21) (He is unwilling to admit that he disobeyed God—he had gained the ability to live for himself and call it living for God.) (He also passes the blame to his soldiers. See 15:13-15, 20-21)
5. His ungrateful heart (15:12) (He takes credit for the victory that God provided.)
6. His unbroken heart (13:11-13, 15:24) (Saul either refused to confess his sins or he confesses his sin when he thought it would help him to make some personal gain. He did not confess his sins by humbling himself and throwing himself on the mercy of God.
7. His proud heart (15:12) (He builds a monument to himself.)
8. His jealous heart (15:12) See also 18:7-11, 19:9-10 (Saul was not to be the sole ruler of Israel; he was to rule under God. He did not have the heart for that type of rule, but David did.)
DAVID—A MAN AFTER GOD'S HEART
(The Man of Faith—God's Choice for King)
1. His submissive heart (24:1-7, 26:8-11) (David is conscience-stricken for merely cutting off the corner of Saul's robe.)
2. His believing heart (17:26, 36-37, 45-46)
3. His wise heart (23:1-2, 30:6-8) (David did not rely on his own wisdom, but sought the wisdom of God.)
4. His humble, jealous-free heart (18:17-23) (David did not exalt himself, 18:18, 23)
5. His broken heart (Ps 51:1-12)
6. His thankful heart (30:23)
7. His open heart (Ps 139:23-24)
