THE TEN COMMANDMENTS*---GOD'S MORAL STANDARDS
Concerning the relationship between God and man
1. You** shall have no other gods before me (Exod. 20:3) (against polytheism)
2. You shall not make for yourself any idol (20:4-6) (against idolatry)
3. You shall not misuse the name of God (20:7) (against blasphemy and
profanity)
4. Remember the Sabbath Day, to keep it holy (20:4-11) (against worldliness—
living as if there is no God)
Concerning the relationship between man and man
5. Honor your father and mother. (20:12) (respect God's design for authority)
6. You shall not kill. (20:13) (respect God's design for life)
7. You shall not commit adultery. (20:14) (respect God's design for sexuality)
8. You shall not steal (20:15) (respect God's design for personal property)
9. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor (20:16) (lie) (respect
God's design for truth)
10. You shall not covet (20:17) (respect God's design for contentment)* Summed up by Jesus in one word: Love! (Matt. 22:37-40)
** Notice that the commands are to each of us individually.
