1. In the world system, the greatest are those who have the most money and also have the most people serving them (waiters, butlers, chauffeurs, maids, store clerks, bell boys, etc.).  In God's kingdom, the greatest are those who are the most humble and are the best servants: "whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant….Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." (Matthew 20:26-28)

2. Jesus described what it means to truly be a servant in these words:  "So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, 'We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.' " (Luke 17:10)

3. When we one day come face to face with the Lord, we most desire to hear these words: "Well done, good and faithful servant!" (Matthew 24:21)

4. Jesus used His last moments with His disciples before His death to teach them that He was calling them to a life of service: He washed their feet.  Then, He told them, "I have set an example that you should do as I have done for you." (John 13:1-17)

5. The Christian life is a life of service.  We are to serve others as Jesus has served us.  The greatest Christians in God's eyes are those who genuinely become the best servants.  How is this different from the way you have looked at your life?  What has to go in a person's life for him or her to be a true servant?  What do you find difficult about choosing to live a life of service?

Matthew 23:11,12 - "The greatest among you will be your servant.  For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted."
