                                  LOVING OBEDIENCE TO GOD
                                  OUR FAMILY*
                                  V

1. One of the primary ways that we are to reach out in love is to reach out in love to the members of our own family.  "If anyone does not provide for his relatives and especially for his immediate family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever." (I Timothy 5:8)

2. Husbands are given this instruction in Ephesians 5:25:  "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself for her."  Wives are to lovingly submit to their husband's leadership "as to the Lord." (Ephesians 5:22)  Children are to honor their "father and mother." (Ephesians 6:2)  Fathers are not to "exasperate" their children (Ephesians 6:4) or "embitter" them (Colossians 3:21).

3. We tend to read these instructions to family members by focusing on how other family members should be treating us rather than focusing on how God wants us to love the members of our family.  What happens when we do this?  What can we do so we will not do this?

4. We should put our focus on what we can do to better love our family members and take our focus off what they should be doing to better love us.  What can you seek to do so that you will show more love toward the members of your family?  How does the Path of the Cross help you in loving your family members (LIGHT, LOVED, LIFE, CROSS)?

Colossians 3:18-21 - "Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.  Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.  Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.  Fathers, do not embitter your children or they will become discouraged."
